Chief Hackett has a crime wave in his district: the woman in change of the women's abuse shelter is shot; wife and mother-in-law of town's photographer have fallen from a precipice under suspicious circumstances; a rock hunting couple is found shot to death, their ruby is found missing; a maniac is killing and mutilating cats; there are suspicious fires at the college; Louanne, the only female cop on the force is being stalked; marijuana growers are setting booby traps for poachers. Hackett must try to find the perpetrators while attempting to resolve his feelings toward Allie, the mother of Louanne.
