Just a few days before Christmas in Cleveland, and a serial killer who mutilates the bodies of his victims is on the loose. Homicide Detective Jack Paris is leading the investigation. Jack is an engaging protagonist. He is divorced, still loves his ex-wife and adores their 11-year old daughter. But being a homicide cop is his life and he loves his job, even if it ruined his marriage. The serial killer case is all consuming to Jack. The killer is resourceful, intelligent and devious. He also practices a Latin American rite similar to Santeria and carves symbols in his victims. With all of this on his plate Jack can hardly believe it when he meets a sexy young woman who appears to be interested in him.

This is the third in the gritty police series set in the inner city of Cleveland, Ohio. Not only are the books suspenseful and filled with action, the characters are well defined. There are several red herrings in this book that really get the reader looking in the wrong direction. The many threads and apparent loose ends are neatly tied up by the ending. I like a writer who can do that! The author also uses the device of having us inside the killer's head and hearing the killer's thoughts, as he prepares his gruesome tasks. It is very effective. This is a book to be read in one sitting, but be warned, it is not for the faint hearted!
