Lieutenant Anson Hilderbrand of the Houston, Texas Police Department isassigned to investigate a number of murders. The more he looks at them, the clearer it becomes that there is a professional organisation carrying out the hits. Can he track down the people behind it?

This is Kerr's first novel and it is an enjoyable read. The chapters are very short, allowing the reader to pick up and put down the book with ease. Kerr does not go into any great depth. For example, when someone is killed, they are killed; large amounts of forensic detail and police procedure are not included. This makes the book proceed much faster, but does not provide the authenticity of writers such as Reichs, Deaver and Patterson, for example.

Whilst I enjoyed reading the book, the major problem that I had with it was the ending. Kerr chose to do something that is almost unbelievable, linked to executions, and although he tried hard to provide a plausible way for his plot to function, it simply did not ring true. It probably would have been better to develop the main part of the book and change the ending.

However, 'The Devil and Lieutenant Hilderbrand' is still entirely readable and there are plenty of other books around where the ending is somewhat bizarre. If you do not worry about that, this is a short, enjoyable and not particularly taxing thriller. A reasonable first novel.
