This time Lord Charles and Lady Kate Sheridan travel to the moors of Devon. Charles, to do some pioneering research on fingerprinting at the dreary prison there, Dartmoo, and Kate to soak in the atmosphere for a possible future book by her alter ego, Beryl Bardwell. She is not the only with book research in mind because we soon run into Arthur Conan Doyle who is checking out the locale for his future book The Hound of the Baskervilles. Into this mix we add an old favorite - Patsy Marsden from Death at Devil¼s Bridge.

Kate is quite busy when a seance at a haunted castle brings together the visiting dignitaries and a mixed bag of the locals. Unexpectedly one of the guests seems to be more in tuned to the spirits than the medium. And the message she gets from the great beyond is „murder¾.

Meanwhile Charles works to use his new fingerprinting technique to clear a man he feels is wrongly convicted and imprisoned for the murder of his wife. His plans are somewhat thwarted when the man in question escapes and is on the run in the moors.

In the middle of all this, one of the locals is found dead. He is beaten, mauled and shot. The complex interactions and mysterious local legends cast a mysterious fog over the truth until Kate and Charles can clear it away and separate all of the threads of this intricately woven mystery.
