Holly is recovering from the trauma of losing her boyfriend to marriage (to a non-dog person of all things!) and a severe blow to the head (aquired while plummeting down a rock hillside). It is not the happiest time of her life. In order to try and deal with the changes in her life, she has given into her friend Rita¼s advice and is seeing a psychologist.

Another friend, Ceci Love, wants to get Holly out more and have her meet eligable men. She talks Holly into joining a dog walking group. Holly is less than thrilled with the laxness of the group towards their dogs and how much of it is off-lead. As she breaks up dog fights and tries to educate the dog walking group, things escalate when one of the dog walkers turns up dead.

Holly must sort through the motives of friends, family, and virtual strangers of the deceased in order to figure out who actually pulled the trigger. It is complicated by the fact that friends, family and a few strangers all have compelling reasons to want the dearly departed dead. With her dogs¼ help she soon separates the ill-wishers from the murderer.

Conant¼s technique of including other character¼s email correspondence and notes gives us a unique insight into just how out of sync some of the characters are with each other and how many ways the same situation can be seen and interpreted. It is especially humorous when Holly¼s dog-obsesed viewpoint is contrasted with a „normal„ person¼s worldview. Holly¼s worldview, on the other hand, helps pull her out of her trauma and back on to solid ground once again. The same cannot be said for the so-called normal people who seem to be losing their footing as Holly is gaining hers.
