Face Down Across the Western Sea is the seventh in the Elizabethan mystery series whose main character is Susanna, Lady Appleton. Susanna is a widow, an herbalist, and a scholar in the mold of Elizabeth I. She is staying in the home of Sir Walter Pendennis, taking care of the household and assisting in a task set by the Queen. Several scholars are also in residence, part of the Queen's secret mission to study all documents relating to the discovery of the lands across the sea and find a way for England to claim the New World. Not all the scholars welcome the help of a woman. Martin Calthorpe is one of these. Yet even though their interactions were difficult, Susanna feels she must help solve the case when Calthorpe is murdered. At the same time she must deal with changes in the household when the crippled Lady Pendennis and her daughter Rosamund arrive. Emerson has created a beguiling narrative. The complexities of the Pendennis family interact with the quirks of the scholars to create a setting full of interesting characters. The details of the scholarship about the discovery of the Americas is fascinating. Recommended.
