Beau Brummell is attending the Duchess of York's (Freddie) birthday celebration at her country estate,Oatlands. En route from London the coach in which his valet, Robinson, is traveling is held up by a highwayman. Beau's valises containing his clothes are stolen, but more important his personal scrapbook is taken. The scrapbook contains a letter Freddie wrote to Beau which, if disclosed, could prove very embarrassing to both of them.

Beau is trying to discover the highwayman's identity to retrieve the letter when one of the guests is found murdered with one of the Duchess' hair ornaments stuck in his throat.

The Duchess calls in Lavender, a Bow Street detective, to conduct the investigation. Beau is at odds with him and conducts his own investigation.

There is another murder with suspicions that the letter is involved. Beau must explore every possibility and means at his disposal to clear the Duchess' name; find the murderer; and find the incriminating letter.

The author has a fine understanding of the conventions of the British society of the time. The characters are enjoyable with the manners of the period. The background is well-researched with a knowledge of the morals and language of the aristocracy and he "lower classes". The story moves smoothly with twists in the plot, hidden motives, blackmail, and a surprising ending.
