Sam Chase is a special agent with the Department of Justice but she still manages to take the time out for her orphaned nephews, who have come to live with her. She is not quite sure how to handle the moods of two teenage boys

that seem to overwhelm her life, so when she gets a call about a case, she is

relieved for a little break. At least with work she knows what she is doing.

However, that relief quickly disappears when she gets to the scene and

discovers that the victim is set up in a familiar trademark. The only problem

is that the man of the trademark had been arrested and executed years ago.

Sam must now confront the very real possibility that she sent the wrong man

to death all the while trying to keep more people from dying.

Chasing Darkness starts off strong, falters in the middle, and then picks

up steam towards the end. About 200 pages in, I started to lose interest and j ust as I was about to put it down, the book enticed me back in. What

redeemed this book for me was the ending. It was such a shock but a fair one,

that left me feeling stunned and wanting more. The characters are all

very-well written and I admire Girard's use of description. This is a book

that I would recommend but with the advice of not giving up on it when the

pace slows down a little.
