Needlework takes a backseat in A Murderous Yarn, Monica Ferris's latest Needlecraft Mystery". The stars of this episode are early automobiles and their owners. When Lars, longtime steady of Betsy's friend Jill, decides to buy a Stanley Steamer (an early steam powered automobile) Betsy decides that her needlework shop will sponsor his entry in the upcoming antique car meet. The horseless carriage subculture attracts people with total dedication-- not only do they work long hours keeping their engines road-worthy, they dress in period costume. (It helps if the drivers' wives are needlewomen, and gives them entry into Ferris's plot.) Betsy befriends the wife of one driver, who visits the needlework shop while her husband's making some engine adjustments. And wouldn't you know it-- her husband is the one driver who doesn't make it to the finish line; his body is found under his burning car.

While Betsy respects the technical expertise that the police bring to the case (after all, her friends Jill and Lars are officers), she also appreciates the value of gossip in the investigation. And the needlewoman's eyes, accustmed to looking closely at minute details, somtimes sees things others have overlooked. A Murderous Yarn, like its predecessors in this cozy series, is a great book to curl up when you need to give your fingers a rest from the needlework. The antique car crowd should be pleased as well. But neither hobby is required to find this a good read.
