In 1966 Missella Mayhew's twin daughters, Yvonne and Yvette go to the country store to buy ice cream. The girls fail to return, and after a massive search by the Negroes, only Yvette is found in a barn in a hysterical state. For her safety and that of her family she is placed in a nursing home.

Thirty years later Harriet Ross, the twins' cousin, comes to Glenora, a small town in South Carolina, to settle the estate of Missella and arrange a trust for Yvette, who has been in a drug-induced state of lethargy for thirty years.

When she visits Yvette and she sees her condition she determines to investigate the circumstances of the twins' disappearance and to learn how her aunt was able to afford the exclusive nursing home.

She is joined by her lawyer, Balt Monroe, and private investigator, "Doc" Halliday. Their efforts stir up long buried secrets and lead to murder, suicide, and scandal.

The story is told in the present with flashbacks to the past in a racially torn atmosphere. The suspense is sustained throughout with a satisfying conclusion. The characters are well-drawn, showing their emotions and prejudices. The author has drawn a vivid picture of the plight of the blacks in the South in the 60's. The story will stay with the reader long after he has turned the last page.
