With Veiled Threats, Deborah Donnelly begins a new cozy series featuring wedding and events planner Carnegie Kincaid. Carnegie, along with her accountant and long-time family friend Eddie, operates Made in Heaven out of her Lake Washington-docked houseboat. Although not exactly operating in the black yet, the wedding business seems to be picking up, and Carnegie's first real society wedding, that of debutante Nickie Parry to up-and-coming concert pianist Ray Ishigura, should start bringing more lucrative business her way.

But the rich aren't like the rest of us, and soon Carnegie is almost over her head in intrigue. The father of the bride is having legal problems and his former business partner (rumored to have mob ties)isn't going quietly. Besides helping choose dresses and plan menus, it becomes part of her job to fend off an annoying reporter trying to win his Pulitzer bringing down the Parrys. Soon Carnegie's wishing she'd never heard of the Parrys and hoping she'll live through this event.

Carnegie is a heroine with a lot of spunk. The mystery is well-developed, and the comic relief throughout makes it an enjoyable read. Readers who enjoyed Donna Andrews's Murder with Peacocks should enjoy cozying up with Veiled Threats as well.
