Angie Amalfi's latest culinary business project is called "Comical Cakes." Her detective boyfriend, Paavo Smith, needs some comic relief as he immerses himself in his current case, a case that has Satanist rite connections. Young women are being brutally murdered. When the bodies are found, they have been mutilated and have candles displayed next to the body. A young woman, Julie, is a soon to be victim. She was accosted and injected with sodium penethal. Later, she is found and her death is attributed to another ritualistic killing.

Angie's business is commissioned to meet with The Baron. When she went to his house, she discovers her twelve o'clock appointment was not at noon as she assumed, but it was to be held at midnight. She left his home feeling eerie, confused and extremely uncomfortable. This is not the last time you will see The Baron and his friends.

Angie has been targeted. She finds toads in her apartment and Paavo tries to protect her but if you know Angie, you know she is Ms. Independence. Was someone playing tricks on her or is this for real?

A crusty, strong willed Zoe Vane comes into Angie's life when she rescues Angie. Zoe explains she is out of work as a pastry chef and starts working at the bakery. Angie is so happy to have Zoe in her life, because on the personal front, Angie and her best friend, Connie, have had a terrible misunderstanding. They have been partners and friends for a long time and now, things are not looking good! Angie seeks advice from her sisters how she should reconcile this relationship. They all have opinions and I thought they were clever (and of course, they were book related). Biana suggested she listen to the Dale Carnegie tape, "How to Win Friends and Influence People." Frannie gives her the book, Time Management. Another sister, Cat, gives her How to Manage Your Anger in Ten Easy Lessons. Her fourth sister, Maria, gives her Living a Saintly Life. Once again, JoAnne Pence has endeared us to not only Angie and Paavo but to Angie's family.

Amidst the numerous issues, there is pressure from her mother. Angie has not yet received a marriage proposal from Paavo and this is of concern to her mother. Paavo has excellent intentions to "pop the question" but timing is not on their side. Angie has a new business to grow and Paavo's job, with such a heavy work load, is physically and mentally drained. What do you think - will this proposal materialize soon; will this couple ever become engaged? The homicide team is making bets.

The subject matter of ritual killings is not my cuppa, but this engaging story was so well written that I enjoyed it! I do like these characters and have been with them through many of their escapades. Don't miss it!
