Kirk Van Pelt is Constable of Covens Hollow, New York in 1905. His past was more colorful, including working on the New York police force under Teddy Roosevelt, and losing an eye fighting in the Spanish-American War. He is sent to Tonopah, Nevada, to catch a crook who stole from the bank at which he was employed. While there he meets Tandy Rostow. Tandy was abandoned by her fiance and makes a living playing piano in a bordello. Tandy and Kirk are mutually and while they are pursuing their romance the bank robber is murdered. Kirk must find the

culprit. When that mystery is solved, Kirk is hired as a Pinkerton detective and sent to Colorado to solve a series of train robberies.

Bristow is a writer who is still developing. His plot and characters alike are sketchier than they could be. The Pinkerton Eye might have been a stronger book if he had expanded one of the two stories to fill the book, and spent more time on the characters. Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, we are told, but the characters often acted inconsistently, and it was distracting. Perhaps it is only real humans who can get away with such improbable behavior.

Nevertheless, the story had promise. Kirk's next adventures should be interesting.
