A man and his wife are out celebrating their anniversary when two men force their way into their isolated home and tie their 15 year old daughter to a chair. When the couple returns, the men secure the woman to another chair, and take the man out to the barn. The daughter finally is able to free herself and her mother and when they go to the barn they find a dead man, his head blown apart by a shotgun blast at close range.

Rothwell had been an accountant, who married the boss' daughter, and was quickly made a partner in the firm but several years earlier had been caught padding time sheets so he was asked to leave, and set up in business for himself. Now he is dead, and DCI Banks must look for the killers. A search of the barn turns up a piece of wadding that shows that the shotgun shells were self-loaded, not purchased commercially, so one group of policemen try and locate the purchaser of the German porn magazine from which the wadding was torn. A tearful phone call from a woman turns up Keith Rothwell's secret identity, he was having an affair, or two, while his wife thought he was away on business.

Dogged police work finally brings a solution to the crime. This is another of Robinson's fine police procedurals set in the grim beauty of Yorkshire.
