Pinkerton agent, Harrison Raines, is assigned by the Secret Service to guard the life of Colonel Edward Baker, Lincoln's best friend. He poses as a scout with the Union forces advancing into Virginia. Baker rejects his protection and places himself in a vulnerable position.

A Southern officer heads for Baker and fires a number of bullets at Baker, killing him instantly. Raines fires at the fleeing officer but is unable to hit him or catch him.

Raines becomes suspect by the Secret Service. After all, he is the son of a Virginia slave owner, and has two brothers in the Rebel army. His loyalty to the Union is questioned.

Raines crosses enemy lines in pursuit of the murderer and is captured by the Rebels and imprisoned. He learns from other Union prisoners that the Federals believe he killed Baker. He must escape from the prison to find the killer and exonerate himself.

This is a well-written, suspenseful mystery with an authentic historical background. The dialogue is clever. The plot is well-constructed. The action is lively. The battle scenes are realistically horrible. The various characters are depicted true to life. The historical details are accurate.

Hopefully there will be more of Harrison's exploits in the future.
