Madeline Bean and her partner Wesley Westcott meet at the Santa Monica Farmer's Market to buy supplies for that night's catering job, a weekly Mah Jong party at the home of a prominent producer of music videos. Wes shows Maddy an old Mah Jong set he found in a fireplace which had been walled off, in the house he was currently renovating. They find a secret drawer which contains a small book covered in red leather, but they don't even have a chance to take it out of the drawer when the box is snatched.

Quita McBride is the widow of the famous aged movie star,Dickie McBride, who owned the house that Wesley is renovating. She is also the current girlfriend of Buster Dubin, the host of the Sweet and Sour Mah Jong Club. When she finds out that the box is missing, she is very upset and frightened. Maddy lends her some money so she can stay at an hotel that night, instead of at Buster's house.

The catering job is successful, as usual. Maddy has her friend, Lee Chen come after the banquet to use the Mah Jong tiles to tell fortunes. Afterwards, Maddy leaves to have a late supper with her boyfriend, Arlo. Things don't go too well and just when you are ready to hit Maddy upside the head, she figures things out for herself and drops Arlo, this time, for good.

Farmer writes in the classic cozy vein but she has a wicked streak of humor...a way of skewering the pompous Los Angeles types, even while having Maddy play the game. Be aware, however, that reading a Mad Bean Catering book is dangerous. Be sure and lock up the refrigerator before you start.
