Detective Chief Superintendent Frankie Sheehan, based in Dublin, is used to dealing with killers, but she's put in an awkward situation by her sister-in-law, a defense lawyer. She wants Sheehan to review the case of Sean Hennessy, recently released from prison after serving seventeen years in the brutal deaths of his parents and near-death of his sister, then a child. Hennessy, who went to jail at the age of fifteen, has always maintained he is innocent, although his sister testified against him. Now, the case is being replayed in the public arena, with a production company filming a tell-all documentary about Hennessy. Trailers of the film are sympathetic to Hennessy.

Sheehan's first meeting with Hennessy is interrupted when she's called away to a murder scene—two people have been killed and their bodies posed in a grim scene outside the church. It soon becomes clear that there is a serial killer, and that the deaths are related to the Hennessy case. But why is someone acting out and killing now, all those year after the initial murders?

While Sheehan and her team are busy trying to solve the serial killer murders, something that in itself makes for a time-consuming caseload, the police commissioner calls Sheehan in. She not only wants Sheehan to be involved in the Hennessy documentary, but wants her to report back on the film's direction—so the top brass can keep one step ahead and control public reaction.

There are many avenues for Sheehan and her team to investigate, and they do. Slowly, clue by clue, they piece together what has happened, also picking up the threads that tie back to the 17-year-old case. Although police procedurals can sometimes be formulaic, THE KILLER IN ME brings in solid characterizations, long-held secrets, and enough suspense to make it a cut above others.
