Frances Wynn seems an unlikely sleuth. Once an American heiress, marriage to the earl of Harleigh has given her a title—countess—and entry into London society. But with her husband's death, Frances and her young daughter have settled into a small Belgravia home. But her life is anything but quiet.

Surrounded by friends and family, her life is quite full—even more so when she's pulled into a murder investigation in this second book in a series. When Mary Archer is found murdered, police first suspect Frances' cousin, Charles—Frances had been trying to make a marriage connection between the two, but Charles had decided not to pursue it. Police also find that Mary's files show she had information on nearly every prominent member of society, and police believe she had been blackmailing one or more people—actions that might had led to her death.

But was it blackmail or was it gossip—fodder for the newspaper gossip column written by "Miss Information"?

In order to find out more, Frances takes over the gossip column, planting hints that she hopes will draw out the killer. She's joined in her adventures by a lively cast of characters: George Hazelton, her neighbor, who is a lawyer and also Frances' suitor; Lily, her younger sister; Aunt Hetty; and Lottie Deaver, Lily's friend and Frances' "little protégé."

Fans of cozy historical mysteries will appreciate this story, set in late 19th century London, populated with independent women, rich historical detail, several romantic subplots, and a well-done mystery plot that leaves you guessing until the end.
