A letter for Debra LaRoche Fontaine, Nan Robinson廣 former secretary, arrives in Nan廣 office. Debra hasn廠 worked for Nan for three years, so the letter from Debra廣 mother starts Nan wondering what happened. Debra廣 marriage to Tony Fontaine collapsed after their son was killed by a car, and she kept looking for happiness in the rough clubs of Los Angeles until someone introduced her to the Past Lives Institute, a typical southern California scam. Debra is found murdered. Shortly thereafter, Tony is found an apparent suicide, so the police decide Tony murdered Debra. Nan isn廠 so sure, so she investigates and eventually solves the mystery. Cannon skewers some of the strange creatures that live in the Los Angeles area, and Nan Robinson, an attorney who is an investigator for the State Bar of California is an interesting detective. This is the first of the series.
