After suffering on the Bataan Death March, the survivors were interned in the Japanese prison camp at Cabanatuan

There for three years they suffered the brutality of their Japanese captors; malnutrition; near starvation; debilitating diseases such as beriberi, scurvy, malaria, dysentery, tuberculosis; lack of medical facilities and supplies. After three years there remained only 513 men.

As the U.S. forces advanced in the Philippines, it was feared that the Japanese might kill the POWs in the camp as they had done in another.

A mission was formed of Army Rangers, headed by Colonel Henry Mucci, to liberate the POWs from the camp. Aided by Filipino guerrillas, Mucci and the Rangers march through the jungle and rivers in great danger behind the Japanese lines, and in a surprise attack manage to free the POWs.

Sides gives a detailed and gut-wrenching narrative of the experiences of the prisoners and their treatment by the Japanese. This is a compelling story of the heroism of these prisoners and also of the dedication of their rescuers. There is depth description of all characters; prisoners, Japanese, Rangers, and guerrillas. The account of the rescue mission with its suspense, danger and daring is stirring. This is a must read for anyone who appreciates the heroism, courage and fortitude of men confronted with adversity.
