What would you think if you and your family came home to find a dead body with some body parts missing in your den? That is exactly what the Corvin family found when they returned from a Sunday night family dinner.

Homicide Detective Milo Sturgis takes one look at the crime scene and calls in Alex Delaware, his buddy who consults as a psychologist with the police from time to time. The crime scene is a mystery in itself. There is no blood, indicating the body was moved, but from where? And how did the murderer get into the Corvins' house? While questioning the family and the next door neighbor, the neighbor on the other side of the Corvins' comes under scrutiny. Known as a bit of an eccentric, the neighbor in question used to be a rather infamous underground cartoonist, but family money has allowed him to retire and live a life cut off from the world. But the cartoonist, while an odd duck to be sure, seems to be too tempting as a posssible suspect. As Alex and Milo investigate, they discover nearly everyone involved has secrets that could impact the case.

This is the thirty-third book in the Alex Delaware series, so obviously Kellerman has found his audience. This book is an excellent example why readers stick with him. As Alex delves into the various characters' psyches and Milo hammers away at the evidence, the ins and outs of the case make for a compelling read that is hard to put down.

Add to that, the characters are real. The friendship between Alex and Milo rings true. Although she plays but a cameo role in NIGHT MOVES, Alex's love interest Robin seems like an actual person and her relationship with Alex is a comfortable one of mutual respect. Even the French Bulldog, Blanche, is a character to be reckoned with in this series. While the plots of the books in a long running series may fluctuate from good to great, it is the characters that keep readers coming back for more.
