Arriving in Paris for a romantic getaway with her fiancé Jean-Paul Bernard, filmmaker Maggie MacGowen finds plans have changed. Jean-Paul calls and asks her to travel to Venice surreptitiously to help him, instructing her to leave laptop and phone in Paris and not tell anyone what she is doing. NUMBER 7, RUE JACOB by Wendy Hornsby is the 11th adventure in the MacGowen series and is the address of the apartment in Paris that Maggie inherited from her biological mother, a woman she never met.

In Venice she finds Jean-Paul has been wounded in an unsettling attack. Maggie goes out to retrieve a package for him and finds she is being followed by someone whom she bumped into in Paris as she was shopping for her trip to Venice. The couple decide they must return to Paris and leave the next day only to find that two mercenaries are tracking them. Since both Maggie and Jean-Paul have been scrupulous about being off the grid – no phones, no credit cards, no contact with family – they can't figure out how the two hired gunmen found them.

Jean-Paul reaches out to friends who can help him identify the hit men. They find that a notorious hacker is tracking them in real time for the criminals by posting a reward along with their photo on the internet, for information about where they are seen. They finally reach Paris only to find the concierge has been attacked by someone trying to gain access to their apartment building.

A riveting read, the mystery is well thought out with impressive twists, though the eventual direction is somewhat unexpected. Hornsby is a masterful writer and she balances narration with dialogue easily propelling the reader to the story's outcome. The author has also carefully incorporated elements that may well prove to be the foundation for Maggie's eventual move to Paris to live with Jean-Paul. A thrilling and engaging read.

Warning: Reading previous adventures in this series is important to fully enjoy this book.
