Frank Sampson廣 first cousin Dave is found dead of an apparent drug overdose. Frank and Dave, born 7 hours apart, had met every year on their shared birthday for dinner and drinks. Dave was prosperous and Frank, a veterinary locum, never questioned him about his profession. Inspector Curley admits to Frank that they had been watching Dave, who was suspected of being a fence, into narcotics, smuggling, gun running, fraud and forgery. Dave廣 father has Parkinson廣 and Alzheimer廣 and his mother had died many years before. Frank arranges his cousin廣 funeral, but is convinced that Dave was murdered, since the site of the fatal injection was in the crook of his left elbow and Dave was completely left handed.

Frank has to let the problem go and earn his living. He accepts a job with a Slattery and Partners in Monksford. The practice has been losing clients. Animals under their care are becoming maimed or are dying. There are 3 generations of the family working together, and although they don廠 need another doctor as they have barely enough work to keep themselves going, they hire Frank because he has solved some crimes in the past.

He resents his role as detective, but as he starts digging into the problems at the Slattery廣 practice, he finds old friends who had been involved with Dave and Frank in the past cropping up, and a convergence of events, which lead to the solution of the question of Dave廣 death as well as the problems of the Slatterys.

By making his protagonist a locum, McCormac is able to change the venue for each book, thereby making new characters available. I don廠 think these books are available in the US, but you can get them from Crime in Store in London. (CrimeBks@aol.com) Playing Dead and Outbreak are the other titles in the series
