Dr. Anita Shining and her husband, Robert, move into an exclusive area in Maryland. She becomes a member of a small group of suburban women.

Anita is a psychiatrist working at the Medical College of Maryland, a short distance from Washington, D.C. She is the recipient of many awards and honors. She directs a program for the terminally ill. She gives seminars where people come to learn how to cope with death. After they have accepted that their life is over, most feel that they would like to leave something behind, do something special to be remembered by.

One of Anita's patients comes to her asking for her help. She is planning to kill a serial killer who is on trial. If convicted, he will spend his life in prison, supported by the public, and with the judicial system what it is will probably be discharged in a few years. She wants to eliminate him as a threat to society. Since she is terminally ill she has only a short time to live. Chances are that she would die before she would be tried, if she were apprehended. So she has "nothing to lose."

This is a fast moving suspenseful story. The characters are well-drawn, have the personalities of real people. Vernadell, daily housekeeper or Roxanne Baxter, adds touches of humor which lighten the story.

Friedman presents a provocative premise. Since the justice system is sometimes lax in its treatment and punishment of criminals, are people with nothing to lose justified in acting as vigilantes? Food for thought....
