The Frieda Klein series by Nicci French, each book featuring a different day of the week, is so tightly woven that it must be read in order. So, if you've not read the previous book, be warned this review contains some spoilers.

In this, the fifth book, the victim has close ties to Frieda—he is her ex-lover, Sandy Holland. More than a year has passed since we last saw Frieda, who suddenly broke off her relationship with Sandy. Since then, Sandy has unraveled, not able to completely accept the breakup. Now, he's been found dead, his throat slashed and floating in the River Thames. Around his wrist is a hospital bracelet with the name "F. Klein."

Police soon focus in on Frieda as the main suspect—the only suspect, in fact. Rather than face arrest, Frieda goes on the run. She believes the killer is Dean Reeve, the shadowy killer who police believe has died—Frieda's insistence that he is alive is seen as further sign of her instability.

Although Frieda comes off as aloof and emotionless, and her reaction to Sandy's death seems cold at times, she is nevertheless a compelling character whom we have seen change, bit by bit, in each book. A loner by nature, she is surrounded by friends and family who add wit and warmth—Josef, Reuben, Chloe, Sasha, and DCI Malcom Karlsson, the latter who puts his job on the line to help her. And Frieda finds, reluctantly, that she must ask for their help this time, as she begins to piece together the last year of Sandy's life, all the while keeping ahead of police—and the killer.

There's plenty of twists in this psychological thriller, and an ending that bodes well for fans. We'll be counting the days until the next Frieda installment.
