Park Ranger Anna Pigeon is about to discover the darker side of nature. While assisting in a grizzly bear research project in Montana's Glacier National Park, Pigeon and her research team is savagely attacked by a grizzly bear, pitching Anna off course from her normal at-peace-with-nature attitude into an unfamiliar world of fear and unease.

When a woman is found dead in the park, Anna offers to pitch in on the investigation, in part to avoid facing her new found fears. As the investigation proceeds, Anna finds herself not only facing the dangers of the grizzly but also the dangers of an even more fierce predator.... man.

I have to admit that I am not overly fond of Anna Pigeon. I love Nevada Barr's suspenseful mysteries. I love her beautiful descriptions of our national parks. I'm fascinated by her look at the inner workings of nature and the park system. But I just don't care for Anna Pigeon. As a result, I often skip her books, torn between wanting to read the story and wanting to avoid Anna. I'm so glad this is not a book I skipped.

As expected, Barr's descriptions of the park and the bears are so powerful that they outweigh Anna's callousness. Her ability to keep your level of fascination skyrocketing overshadows the rather easy to figure out solution to the mystery. All-in-all, a book so beautifully written that it overcomes its flaws to become one that I can recommend, whether you like Anna Pigeon or not.
