In this second book in the series, a young teen in a catatonic state is brought into the psych ward at Children's Hospital of Buffalo. No one knows who she is, and no one seems to be looking for Jane Doe, as she's named.

Zoe Goldman, a resident on probation (from incidents that happened in the first book), should just be sticking to her job and studying for an upcoming medical exam. But Zoe, who has the added burden of dealing with her ADHD, can't leave well enough alone. She constantly second-guesses her attending, Dr. Tad Berringer, and constantly calls the detective on Jane's case, whom she knows from the previous incident. Piecing together clues from the Internet and from her patient's responses, Zoe slowly begins to unravel the truth. She doesn't have much time, though, as Zoe becomes convinced someone is trying to kill her patient.

Sandra Block, a practicing neurologist, gives a realistic look at a children's psych ward that is filled with teenage struggles, from eating disorders to drug abuse and pregnancy. But a story that could easily become bogged down in medical terminology and lingo is instead a breezy, fast-paced thriller. Block also gets inside the head of Zoe, a young woman trying to balance a new relationship with the direction of her career, and someone who only gets down to studying after checking her Instagram, Facebook and Twitter feeds (all of that social media pays off, though, in the end).

This second book is a nice follow-up to Block's debut, and as Zoe figures out that she really does enjoy the detecting, it looks like more books are certain to follow. That's good news for those of us who like psychological thrillers.
