Jacko Penhaligon is immediately brought in for questioning when the body of an 8 year old girl is found dead in the woods which he takes care of for the local squire, Gerald Langdon. He and his wife, Janet, and older son, Michael,17,had moved to the village 16 years before after he had been found guilty of exposing himself to little children. The local parents just warn their daughters to stay away from Jacko. They feel sorry for his wife Janet, a good loving woman, who has Jacko and a retarded boy to care for, as well as a more normal younger son, Brian.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Roper is put in charge of the case. Of course they bring in Jacko for questioning but he has never been violent, and they don1t really think he is guilty. They slog through the village, interviewing everyone, with especial interest in those who walk their dogs through the wood, or who have gone their for a quiet snog.

The lives of the villagers unfold systematically through the actions of the police. We learn about Detective Constable Alan Campbell, with whom Roper discusses football, and Sgt. Barry Swan, who has the reputation of being a lothario. And how much Roper misses his wife and son who are away for a week visiting grandma.

This is a classic procedural which illustrates the methodical way in which the police have to painstakingly process information in order to get the job done. Along the way, not only is the murderer found, but another crime is uncovered that has far reaching effects.
