Anyone considering a whirlwind romance that ends in marriage should read Erica Spindler's thriller. Because, after all, how well can you know someone you met just a few weeks ago?

On this concept hangs THE FIRST WIFE. Bailey Browne meets Logan Abbott in Grand Cayman and he proposes twelve days later. A seemingly smart, grounded woman, she nevertheless harbors a fantasy of being swept off her feet - and gives in to it. She marries Logan and returns with him to his lush Louisiana horse farm. But post-marriage life is hardly idyllic.

There's some important information Logan has neglected to tell Bailey: that his first wife disappeared and is presumed dead by some - or that his first marriage also followed a short courtship and that his first wife looked very much like Bailey. As it turns out, the town's police chief is out to prove that Logan not only killed his first wife, but also killed two other young women who have disappeared in recent years. When a third woman disappears, the investigation focuses on Logan.

Now Bailey is torn between the man she loves, but doesn't really know and her doubts, fueled by Police Chief Billy Ray Williams, who seems to have a personal vendetta against Logan. Which man is right?

While there are some hints of Daphne du Maurier's REBECCA in this book, the story doesn't quite match the level of that classic's psychological suspense. Bailey, while likable, is someone who doesn't always make the best choices. The book also had some major typos, including (many times) misspelling the last name of a character.

Still, despite these flaws, THE FIRST WIFE is a light, overall enjoyable read. Fans of GONE GIRL and other domestic thrillers should enjoy this novel.
