Matt Witten returns with another mystery featuring stay-at-home dad, Jacob Burns. This is a delightfully refreshing series, and this installment does not disappoint.

Jacob Burns is a sensitive new age guy. He's perfectly willing to call his young sons "Latree" and "Charizard" rather than their given names, because that's what they want this month. He's not threatened by being the dad in a group of moms at school events. Unfortunately, people keep getting killed around him, and his ability to solve the murders is very threatening to both killers and cops.

As the story begins, Jacob and a group of parents are lobbying for a gifted program for their children, who are not being challenged by traditional education. The principle fails to show up for the meeting, and is found dead in his office-- conked on the head by a spelling bee trophy. And no matter how he looks at it, it seemsinevitable that one of Jacob's friends is the murderer. Jacob's wife Andrea ( a college English instructor) plays Watson on some of Jacob's interviews, and really surprises both of them with her assertiveness and dedication to learning the truth.

The Killing Bee is a very satisfying cozy read-- good characters, good plot, well-timed action. Let's hope this series keeps going strong.
