working out of a home office, recently married to newspaper reporter Zach Moran. As always, Alex Matthews makes effective use of dreams and internal conversations in the novel. Cass's thoughts are presented in italics, so the reader sees her thoughts as well as reading the words she voices aloud. This works well not only when we look in on therapy sessions, but when we watch Cass look for hidden meanings in the words of her family and friends, and censor her own thoughts while speaking.

It begins with Cassidy waking from a dream, and feeling that there is something important about this date that she should remember. A few minutes later, sipping her coffee and reading the paper on her porch this warm November morning, Cass is startled into remembrance. Cassidy's picture, and obituary, appear in the neighborhood weekly. And Cass remembers that on this date 15 years ago her world was rocked by the death of another. Soon thereafter, Cass receives some threatening e-mail. It seems someone wants to kill Zach, to steal him from Cass, in retaliation for Cass's role in the death of another.

And as usual, Cass and Zach take on the investigation themselves, begrudgingly giving the police some details as the threats escalate. Fortunately, Zach is able to do most of his work from home, so he's able to accompany Cass on most of her investigation. Besides keeping up with her clients in therapy, Cass is also coping with a mother in crisis (as usual), an unhappy Starshine who's been denied the cat door until the enemy is unmasked, and the troubled relationship between Zach and his teenaged son Bryce.

Matthews does an excellent job in portraying her characters as humans, who just happen to be involved with crime. The Cassidy McCabe books provide rewarding reading for many.
